BOOK SUMMARY ANALYSES - Essay Example Form creates expectations within the viewer because it presents a picture of an entire whole into which the various elements fit comfortably; as a result when a work of art is incomplete in some aspect for instance, it appears unbalanced. Viewer’s perception of form in a work of art arises from within the work and from prior experiences . Emotions represented in film also fall within the category of form because they determine how a viewer is likely to respond to the depiction of emotion in the work. A spectator’s emotional response is also elated to form, because it will enhance or detract from the viewer’s perception of the meaning of the work of art. Meaning is a vital element of form and is important for the experience of the entire work. Every work of art is attributed a deeper meaning or significance based upon the overall context within which the work of art occurs; for example the form in the film Wizard of Oz is attributed on the basis of the meaning of transition into adulthood itself. Overall form has the following components: (a) function, i.e, the role of the element in the overall system (b) similarity and repetition of individual motifs in the film (c) differences and variations of elements in the film (d) the development and/or progression of elements and (e) the unity or disunity among the elements. As a result, form may be summarized as the specific pattern of relationships which is perceived within an artwork. According to Beardwell and Thompson, narrative is the way that human beings make sense of the world. The narrative form of filmmaking tells a story and it is the most common kind of film narration format that is used. In essence, a narrative may be said to be a chain of events occurring in a cause-effect type of relationship over a period of time. The narrative form has three basic elements – causality, time and space. The narrative film format is like telling a story – it could be focused upon one

Economic Growth in US Spurred by New Innovative Technologies Essay

Economic Growth in US Spurred by New Innovative Technologies - Essay Example The essay "Economic Growth in US Spurred by New Innovative Technologies" talks about the last 30 years of the 19th century which was a time in the United States history that was defined by economic growth spurred by new innovative technologies. The greater overall levels of prosperity lead to a massive population growth in this country. For example, the city of New York had a population of 468,492 in 1869, twenty years later the population had grown to 1,093,701 inhabitants. The cities became overpopulated and there was a need to expand away from the cities into the suburban areas. Society was in need of more housing for the new residents that were entering the country either through immigration or through natural birth. The most influential factor that spurred the economy during this era was the construction industry. There were big changes during this era in the capability humans had to travel longer distances in shorter periods of time. New technological breakthroughs in transportat ion systems shorten the distances between rural areas and cities. Some of the key transportation technologies that appeared during this era were the cable street car, the electric trolley, and elevated railroads. With the ability to travel further distances the population and families were able to move away to intermediate regions between the city and rural space, thus the suburban neighborhood was born. At this time construction of homes picked up and enter into the middle class was defined by ownership of a home.

Child Exposure to Domestic Violence Brutal conduct at home happens in opposite sex and same-sex relationships and private relations that may be married, living separately, or dating. Aggressive conduct at home impacts the people misused, and additionally generously influences relatives, partners, and those observing. Juveniles who grow up observing abuse conduct at home, are among those genuinely affected by this crime. Violence in the home does not simply slants youths to various social and physical issues, furthermore demonstrates to them that ruthlessness is a standard way of life. By result, enhances their risk of transforming into societys best in a class of setbacks and abusers (The United States Department of Justice, 2016). Domestic behavior in a household is known by various names; abuse in any type of relationship like marital violence or family abuse. Abusive behavior at home is not only one single conduct, yet rather it is viewed as physical, sexual as well as mental practices done by a present or former family member. Local abuse occurs amongst men and women consistently; yet generally, a woman will probably encounter physical wounds or physiological results than men. These damaging and unnerving practices are proposed to control and command the associate to accomplish submission from their accomplices and reliance (McIntosh, J., 2003). This paper will depict the video of Child Exposure to Domestic Violence and on the off chance it identifies individual abuse, property abuse or approach issues. It will cover the easygoing components that were tended in the video. The strategy suggestions or proposals that were given in the video to address abuse will also be discussed. Were the budgetary or monetar y issues talked about and what future ramifications were covered in the video will be determined. The significant of substance data, the fundamental components of the crime and criminological theories or speculations that best clarifies the event of the crime will be uncovered. The strategy issues that worries America today is the way many juveniles are being presented to aggressive behavior at home. Up to this point, many individuals did not comprehend the effect that the presentation of abusive behavior at home has on children. The substance of the video Child Exposure to Domestic Violence is viewed as an individual crime. Even though aggressive behavior at home is not seen as an individual, it has been seen as a strike. In the video, it was clarified the number of these children that are presented to abusive behavior at home. Juveniles, at 15 times higher velocity can feel depression versus a typical adult. It demonstrates how young children can be liable to traumatic play that causes push and can indicate disruption and unsettled conduct. Children who witness abusive behavior at home can hint at blame from the abuse and do not entirely understand why this is occurring. Analysts have confirmed that many youths episodes can regularly take after into their grown-up lives that may prompt to adult sadness (Hornor G, 2005). Guardians at times do not comprehend that abusive behavior at home can affect a childs life. One remarkable effect is that when a child is presented to aggressive behavior at home at an early age, it can influence their residential perception of the conclusions or that one may have on an individuals character. These occasions can impact an adolescent and the decisions they make later in life. The conduct that a significant portion of these children gets can have an effect on the way they act. Numerous young fellows can wind up getting to be distinctly fierce, and women can get to be distinctly abused. The look on life is changed, and occasionally the cycle proceeds when they get more established. Since commonly there was no assistance given to the family, a large portion of the children does not see that what is going on is not right so the kids may wind up following in the wrong bearing. One approach to change abusive behavior at home in the house was how to show authorities, instructors, advisors, specialists, companions, families on methods to perceive crime among our children. It additionally considered casualties and their kids to stand up and look for help. Many authorities are educated to make inquiries and search for signs amid private sessions or specialists visits. Courts and group associations can give administrations, for example, services to help advise the general population that there is an assistant. Numerous health specialist now offer psychological wellness administrations and directing; Local Social Service offices can assist by advising or help search for various work or instructive administrations. A large portion of these projects is state financed permitting many abused families to look for the help they require. Children that are presented to aggressive behavior at home are liable to turning into a casualty themselves. It is a social issue that influences many individuals in America. While large portions of these reactions are toward grown-up victims of abuse, the consideration has now moved toward the kids inside these homes. The physical and enthusiastic impact that abusive behavior at home has represents an issue to the children since they can turn out to be more helpless against their emotions. A portion of the violent problems that exist among kids are the dread of being separated from everyone else, rest unsettling influences, and turning out to be distant from their surroundings. Social Learning Theory of residential abuse clarifies that all through time, numerous speculations have been created to define human conduct. Gabriel Tarde, a French social scientist creation social learning theory was developed by Canadian scholar, Albert Bandura. The theory has proved to be influential when it comes to define the capability to learn and improve. His theory expresses that individuals are not conceived roughly they get to be distinctly brutal by watching and impersonating the conduct of another. This social learning theory is connected to household abuse since a significant part of the general population who abuse others are found out practices from their adolescence which is known as the observational learning (Schmalleger, 2012). A substantial part of our childrens actions is from many sources. The behavior of a juvenile has lot to do with the influence within their home, television programs they watch and the schools they attend. As soon as we change the framework to a positive structure for children to modify beginning with their home, standards or change in conduct will be observe. Numerous authorities suspect that these practices are hereditarily from inside. However, the reality of the situation is that a significant number of the general population who are victims or con artists are from broken homes who endured these sorts of practices. It will never be unmistakably comprehended why men abuse women. The risk that incorporates these kids is huge to the point that the problem will reliably be an issue until it is solved. Rock And Roll Essay -- essays research papers

â€Å"America. betaking herself to formative action(as it is about time for more solid achievement, and less windy promise), must , for her purpose, cease to recognize a theory of character grown of feudal aristocracies, or form’d by merely literary standards, or from any ultramarine, full-dress formulas of culture. polish, caste, &c., enough, and must sternly promulgate her new standard, yet old enough, and accepting the old, the perennial elements, and combining them into groups, unities, appropriate to the modern, the democratic, the west, and to the practical occasions and needs of our own cities, and of the agricultural regions.†1 Walt Whitman wrote this poem back in 1855. A hundred years before rock and roll was invented, people like Walt Whitman could sense that a change needed to happen in America. In the 1880’s, the Robber Barons had a dramatic impact on America. Some of them, such as Andrew Carnegie showed that people could rise from rags to riches. The 1920’s were called the Roaring 20’s, partly because people were carefree and willing to have fun. Jazz became the dominant form of music. Finally along comes the 1950’s. America has gotten out of WW2 and is now ready for a new evolution. People are feeling how they did back in the 20’s; carefree and willing to do anything for fun. On March 5, 1951, a rhythm-and-blues band, Jackie Brenston and His Delta Cats, recorded â€Å"Rocket 88†, a frenetic, toe-tapping tribute to a customized car.2 This was the birth of Rock and Roll. The music didn’t catch on until 1955 though, when Bill Haley produced â€Å"Rock Around the Clock†. The song soared up the pop charts, and became the first rock and roll song to ever-hit number 1. From the music of Elvis Presley and Buddy Holly, to Little Richard and Jerry Lee Lewis, no other style of music has so greatly impacted the lifestyle of the American people.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Elvis Presley was the most recognized and the most influential rock and roll artist that ever lived. In 1956, Elvis made his way into the national spotlight with his single â€Å"Heartbreak Hotel†. He set in stone the image and sound of rock and roll that would endure as long as the music lived.3 With the swivel of his hips, the slur of his voice, and the curl of his lip, he evoked the force and feeling of youth and sex and the rebellion that would become the image of rock and roll. He also stamped ... ...sten to rap, sca, hip hop, etc., but our parents hate it. They are doing the same thing to us that their parents did to them in the 50’s. Even today, we are advancing. Dress styles that were banned 20 years ago are standard today. Music has influenced our lives from the very start. It is who we are. Rock and roll is a symbol of America. It is a national pastime. If it were not for Elvis Presely or Buddy Holly or Jerry Lee Lewis or any of the rock and roll artists of the 50’s, our grandparents and parents may not have realized the need for change and we would probably still be listening to jazz and opera all the time. A quote by Gilbert Ostrander tells how the younger generation of America always finds something new to latch onto. When they get bored with that, they move on to something else. â€Å"The younger generation is at all times simultaneously appearing on the field and moving off the field and trying to stay on the field while turning into something else. N o sooner have the rules of the game been officially explained by the younger generation, than another game is discovered to be in progress on the same field under different rules by a somewhat different younger generation.†19

Lessons Learned from Vietnam War

Introduction The Vietnam experience was a war that lasted for almost twenty years. The American military and leadership appear to have learned some lessons from our involvement in the Vietnam War. This paper will discuss the lessons learned from the following arenas: diplomatic negotiations, presidential leadership, and cultural/social contexts. Diplomatic Negotiations Princeton University (2006) defines diplomatic negotiations as between nations. The lesson learned by the Americans was the need to communicate with their enemy. Our military leaders and president, Lyndon Johnson, used bombing as â€Å"verbal† negotiations with Vietnam. Neither the Americans nor the Vietnamese were willing to compromise and enter into discussions. This refusal to enter into talks led to millions of deaths. The Vietnam War could have been avoided entirely or ended much sooner had the negotiations taken place. Presidential Leadership Presidential leadership styles vary from president to president along with their cabinet members. From Presidents Eisenhower to Nixon, each had their own style in how to handle negotiations and win the war in North Vietnam. Presidents Eisenhower and Kennedy provided aid to South Vietnam in the form of military training. President Johnson sent aid to South Vietnam in the form of military troops. President Nixon negotiated the withdrawal of troops from Vietnam giving him â€Å"peace with honor† (Devry University, 2011). One of the best lessons that can be learned from our presidential leadership is that there is a need to admit mistakes. Although no one ever wants to admit when they are wrong, the public can be more forgiving when they are told the truth. America was losing the Vietnam War, but no president ever wanted to admit defeat nor did a president want to go all in. The Rules of Engagement were so restrictive that it made winning a war in Vietnam virtually impossible. Cultural/Social Context The Vietnam War brought about changes in how Americans felt about war. Americans were torn in their feelings about being involved in Vietnam. One of the lessons learned was that technology can be defeated by resourcefulness and determination. The American leaders felt that the war could be won through guns and bombs. They underestimated the will of the Vietnamese. They (government and military) leaders were ignorant of the Vietnamese culture. The Vietnamese were all in for the fight but the Americans were not. The Vietnamese fully believed in their cause but the American people were uncertain and later multiple protests were held across our country reflecting this uncertainty. Conclusion The experiences in Vietnam taught U. S. military and government leaders many lessons on diplomatic negotiations and the importance of learning the cultures of other countries. As a practical historian, I have learned the Vietnam War was not just a war that spanned a few years but many years. I have also learned that the war in Vietnam was not something any president wanted to have happen. However, once the war escaladed and American troops were sent over to Vietnam, the restrictions placed on them made it very difficult for soldiers to fight the war. Also, many men only enlisted for a year, leaving units discombobulated with experienced and â€Å"green† soldiers†. This made for a lack of cohesiveness within the unit. President Johnson never wanted to admit defeat. In the end, it cost him a chance at a second term as president. There is great value in studying past history. When we examine our history, we are able to see why things are done the way they are now. Studying history allows us to learn from our mistakes and change the direction or course that is taken the nest time. Military leaders and the government are not only able to review what worked and why, but also what failed and why. History of any subject is important because it teaches lessons learned. Nutrition & Fitness Paper Essay

Nutrition and Fitness play different roles in American’s lives. According to Healthy People 2010 54% of Americans are not regularly active, 15% are not active at all. Americans consume too many calories, often in the form of added sugars and fats, but too few vitamins and minerals, in part because the intake of fruits, vegetables, and milk products is relatively low. (Insel & Roth. 2008 p.367) There is a number of health risks associated with obesity. According to WebMD.com â€Å"Obesity is not just a cosmetic problem, it’s a health hazard. Someone who is 40% overweight is twice as likely to die prematurely as is an average-weight person. This is because obesity has been linked to several serious medical conditions†. Some of the health risks that are associated with obesity include: Heart disease and stroke, High blood pressure, Diabetes, Cancer, Gallbladder disease and gallstones, Osteoarthritis, and Breathing problems, such as asthma. (WebMD.com). There are many ways that American’s can incorporate fitness and nutrition in their daily lives. This paper will discuss fitness and nutrition habits, and suggest new habits that will benefit your health and promote healthy weight. My current fitness and nutritional habits include many positive traits. For starters I always try to eat something nutritious every two to three hours each day, by doing this I continually eat healthy foods and I stay fuller longer reducing the chances of having fatty snack foods throughout the day. I try to remember to make sure that each of my meals contains lean protein, like some fish, turkey, or egg whites and the appropriate servings from the food pyramid. I love fruits so I try to eat a lot of fruits and vegetables with each meal or as a snack in throughout the day. On occasions I have a high carbohydrate drink that is high in protein such as soy milk combined with a serving of a nutritional carbo snacks, usually within thirty minutes before a workout. I also try to regularly drink only non-calorie containing beverages, like water or sugar free water based drinks. I try to eat healthy fats on a daily basis, like almonds, nuts, fish, and flax seed oils. I know that I should obtain all of my carbohydrates from fresh fruits and vegetables, but sometimes have limited time to prepare these items due to my hectic schedule and I find myself taking easy shortcuts. In an attempt to better my fitness habits I will attempt to incorporate some  new fitness habits into my daily lifestyle. Three new fitness habits that I could reasonably incorporate into my lifestyle would include eating healthy breakfast, exercising first thing in the morning and obtaining my vitamins and nutrients through foods versus vitamin supplements. It is commonly said that breakfast is the most important meal of the day well this has always been a statement that is hard for me to live by. I often find myself rushing out the door to get my child off to school and make it to work on time without indulging in breakfast first. By the time I get around to having my morning meal it is nearly lunch time. My metabolism is running at the lowest gear of the entire day when I first wake up in the morning. My body is running on pure fumes alone. The second I eat something, my body cranks into gear and metabolically starts working at a higher rate. If I could make time to incorporate breakfast into my day my metabolism would kick into gear much sooner and I would have more energy which would result in an overall better day and a better workout. As with eating breakfast getting in a quick workout in the morning will jump start my metabolism for the day. Just quick ten or fifteen minutes of a workout in the morning will give me more energy and prepare me for my hectic day. The later in the day I work out the less likely I will be able to get to sleep on time. Overall I think exercising in the morning makes me feel healthier and gives me a better attitude. I have discovered that I need to try to get my vitamin and nutrients intake through my food supply rather then through supplements. Supplements only provide the vitamins and minerals listed on the bottle. But food supplies a lot more – antioxidants, phytochemicals that are beneficial to the body, and probably even things that scientists haven’t discovered yet. It’s also cheaper to get nutrients this way. A bottle of multivitamins may not be expensive, but if one was to factor in all the other things, such as antioxidants and essential fatty acids, the cost would be quite high. By obtaining my vitamins and nutrients through my food intake I will be receiving additional benefits. In conclusion, I understand that there are several habits that I need to change regarding my nutrition and fitness. I now realize that if I can make the three fitness and nutritional changes and incorporate them into my lifestyle I can greatly improve my nutrition and fitness. I also understand that I am putting myself at a higher risk of developing several health related problems if I do not make and attempt to better my nutritional habits. I hope that in the coming weeks that I can make the necessary changes to not only promote healthier nutrition and fitness habits, but overall health and wellness as well.
